Day of Remembrance...

Two years ago today thirty-two people were killed, then the murderer took his own life bringing the total body count to 33 but countless lives were affected on that day.

Today we remember the tragedy that struck the close knit community at Virginia Tech.

Blacksburg is 40 miles from where I live, but the shock of what happened that day went far beyond map lines and straight to the hearts of everyone. News coverage called it a "massacre", covering the story for weeks, causing an outpouring of sympathy from all over the world including other colleges who wore the Virginia Tech colors to signify their support.

Two years ago we wore maroon & orange to mourn the loss of so many; today I wear it to remember.

Doesn't seem like it's been that long already, that's how fresh the whole thing still is in my mind.

I'll never forget when this happened. It was incredibly sad and frightening, and I'm sure even more so for you being so close to where you live.

I'm in VA, too, straight up 81... I went to Radford and my ex went to Tech. When I heard on the radio that today was the 2nd anniversary, I was shocked. It seems like it just happened.

Great post... we need to remember. And we need to work toward it never happening again... though we're not doing a very good job, based on the many mass shootings that have taken place across the country lately.

I, too, was surprised that two years have gone by.

I was teaching at a small university at the time and I remember one of my students asking me what I would do if that happened in our school. I gave her the only honest answer I had: "I just don't know."

What a beautiful moment that is with all the students and candles.

We have friends who had kids there when this happened...they immediately went to retrieve them. I completely understood.
